Description

Product Description

This very special collector’s edition brings together all twelve books into three hardback volumes—over 5,000 pages of fascinating Tolkien material—and places them in one matching box.

J.R.R. Tolkien is famous the world over for his unique literary creation, exemplified in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. What is less well known, however, is that he also produced a vast amount of further material that greatly expands upon the mythology and numerous stories of Middle-earth, and which gives added life to the thousand-year war between the Elves and the evil spirit Morgoth, and his terrifying lieutenant, Sauron.

It was to this enormous task of literary construction that Tolkien’s youngest son and literary heir, Christopher, applied himself to produce the monumental and endlessly fascinating series of twelve volumes, The History of Middle-earth.

About the Author

CHRISTOPHER TOLKIEN (1924–2020) was the third son of J.R.R. Tolkien. Appointed by Tolkien to be his literary executor, he devoted himself to the editing and publication of unpublished writings, notably The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and The History of Middle-earth.

J.R.R. TOLKIEN (1892–1973) is the creator of Middle-earth and author of such classic and extraordinary works of fiction as The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. His books have been translated into more than fifty languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide.

Do not buy this, unless you are prepared to examine closely every page and see if they are all there. Having read part, I set mine aside for awhile. Picking it up again, continued reading, only to find that they had duplicated, and repeated part of what I had already read! Too late to return, that''s $240 down the toilet. DO NOT BUY! DO NOT BUY!

The outer case for the three books was damaged on the top and bottom. I would have expected something sturdier. I will be returning this and likely just buy the paperback versions until something better comes along...

Disappointing Quality-

Book 1 and book 3, the corners were damaged. The Slip case is not sturdy at all.

Book 1: had the Cover/Bookmark attached upside down to the words. Very poor quality control.

Will return for Refund, won''t waste time trying this edition again.

Thin leaves; physically difficult to read

This would have been better off as 5 volumes with thicker paper. You can see through each page to the writing on the other side, making it extremely difficult to read.

I had the complete run of originals at one time, lost in a flood.
I''ve always wanted to replace all twelve books in one matching set but 8t proved both too difficult and too expensive. So I was extatic to see this lovely boxed set for half price on Amazon.
They are handsome books. The box is cardboard, but nice enough. The volume of pages squashed into these three books means that the paper is thin and the type is extremely small so be prepared to use a page magnifier. The paper is nice and expensive feeling, like that of a pricey dictionary or Bible. I own the expensive two volume Oxford Dictionary and the paper is of comparable quality.

I''m something of a Tolkien armchair expert, but more importantly to men reading these and his early drafts taught me that even great writers start by scribbling terrible nonsense and then fix it later. It''s a lesson I''ve kept in my foremind my whole writing Iife.

I am an enormous Middle-earth fan, but couldn''t afford the individual volumes, especially at retail price. Buying this collection at half-price was a steal! The books are beautiful, despite their simple design. I had a problem with my first order: the box the collection nests in was beaten up on the edges and the pages of the first volume were upside down. My replacement came before my return was picked up (kudos, Amazon!), and I am very pleased with them. Anyone who has an interest in an in-depth and expansive lore would be wise to add this to their collection!

Like most everyone who purchased this item has already stated, the dust cover is too flimsy and is subject to damage. My dust cover arrived with a 4 inch stress tear in the top back seam of the dust cover. I was able to easily repair the damage with tacky glue and the repair is virtually undetectable, so I chose to keep it. Because of this flaw I only gave it 4 stars. The thin paper discussed in other reviews is not an issue to me as it seems to be of good quality and is durable enough to be easily read without damage. The outside covers are quite attractive. I would highly recommend this item to other Tolkien fans.

As for the product itself.....this is a nearly comprehensive collection of the background stories and literary development of Ea. Highly recommended! Indispensable for Tolkienites or anyone making a study of Tolkien’s legendarium. I also recommend reading ‘The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien’ concurrently with this set.

The Complete History is an essential purchase for Tolkien fans, with all kinds of interesting material relating to both The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. Versions available currently include twelve expensive print-on-demand hardbacks, twelve cheap paperbacks or this new three volume deluxe boxed set. The advantages of the new edition are that it is the most compact of the three, beautifully printed and bound in the same style as other JRRT deluxe slipcased books and - at the £146 pre-order price - remarkably good value for money. (Anyone concerned about the quality of the Bible-like paper need not worry - I''m hard to please in such matters, and I''m more than happy with what Harper''s English printer has achieved.) My only regret about the set is that the slipcase is a tight fit and has straight sides rather than the curves of earlier deluxe volumes, which makes extracting the books needlessly awkward: you have to upend the heavy box and rely on the help of gravity. ( I recommend covering the books in W. H. Smith''s non-stick protective film to avoid damaging them and to reduce friction.) This caveat apart, I think that this new edition is certainly preferable to the alternatives.

It’s one heavy stack of a collection, it’s nicely-designed aesthetically pleasing and for I don’t have to get 10+ separate copies of different volumes. The only problem is that the shipping was quite brutal therefore and there are dents on the covers. update: I reordered a replacement because the first one I received most likely had some pre-existing binding issues. Make sure you check the book bounds upon arrival. They are bricks and therefore loose bounds will result in them falling apart very quickly.

My main concern with this set was the books would be too impractical to actually read from due to the size of the books, I can confirm that, yes they are bulky but surprisingly quite easy to read from.
